1/1250s at f9.0 ISO:800, Canon Mark III 1Ds w/800mm

The Rough-legged Hawk in North America is a medium-large bird of prey. It breeds on cliffs, slopes or in trees, laying about four eggs, but more in good lemming years. Incubation takes 28 to 31 days. Days to fledge takes 39 to 43. It hunts over open land, eating small mammals and carrion. This species along with the Osprey is one of the few large birds of prey to hover regularly. Its feet are feathered to the toes. The breeding range is northernmost Europe, Asia, and North America. It migrates further south in winter.
