The eastern towhee is a large New World sparrow. Their breeding habitat is brushy areas across eastern North America. They nest either low in bushes or on the ground under shrubs. Northern birds migrate to the southern United States. They forage mostly on the ground, frequently scratching in the leaf-litter. Incubation (3 to 4 eggs) is mostly or entirely done by the female for about 12 to 13 days. Both parents feed the nestlings. Young leave the nest after about 10 to 12 days after hatching and may remain with parents for some time thereafter. Often they produce 2 broods per year.
